What is BHRT?
Bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT) refers to the replacement of hormones that are identical to those that the body produces. Effective for both men and women, these hormones are commonly offered as creams, capsules, vaginal suppositories and injections. Treatment mainly focuses on hormones such as testosterone, estrogen, progesterone, dehydroepiandosterone (DHEA), cortisol, and thyroid.
Why give BHRT?
As women and men get older, we experience a decline in our production of natural hormones. Since hormones play a key role in regulating activity in our brain and body, regulating gene function, and overall effect on energy and a feeling of wellness, metabolism, stress and libido, replacement of these hormones is an amazing alternative to optimal health and vitality.
What is Adrenal Fatigue?
Adrenal Fatigue is a deficiency in the functioning of the adrenal glands. Normally functioning adrenal glands secrete minute, yet precise and balanced amounts of steroid hormones. However, because they are designed to be so very responsive to changes in physical, emotional, and psychological environment, any number of factors can interfere with this finely tuned balance. This means too much physical, emotional, environmental, and/or psychological stress can deplete the adrenals, causing a decrease in the output of adrenal hormones, particularly cortisol. This lowered adrenal activity (hypoadrenia), resulting from the constant assault on the adrenals, can range in severity all the way from almost zero to almost normal. The chief symptom of adrenal fatigue is, indeed, fatigue, but is accompanied by many other sign and symptoms.
Stresses Add Up
The number of stresses, whether or not they are recognized, the intensity of each stress and the frequency with which it occurs, plus the length of time it is present, all combine to form the total stress load.
It is when the body becomes unable to make the appropriate changes to these stresses that adrenal fatigue begins. The worse the overload relative to the ability of the body to respond, the worse the adrenals fatigue.
How can I keep my adrenal glands healthy?
The guidelines for keeping your adrenal glands healthy are very similar to the overall principles of good health. A moderate lifestyle with high quality food, regular exercise and adequate rest, along with a healthy mental attitude to the stresses of life go a long way towards keeping the adrenals strong and resilient. However, because modern life is so stressful, certain nutritional supplements and hormones are also important to both maintaining healthy adrenal glands and helping depleted adrenal glands recover.
